Invention is seeing stakeholder needs and then seeing ways to beneficially fill those needs. Training can help people see problem/solution pairs more quickly and clearly, develop them, and potentially patent them. Culture building can move invention from being an afterthought or one-off event to something that is a habitual part of organizational life.
I can facilitate conversations which lead to invention disclosures that strategically support patent, technology, and business strategies.
I conduct research using patent, internet, and generative AI search tools. The results can identify prior art and freedom to operate for patents, identify potential partners and competitors for commercialization, and generate ideas for new inventions. While my technical knowledge is broad, my deep expertise is in agricultural technology including equipment automation and autonomy, precision agriculture, and intelligent agricultural systems.
I am open to writing articles and to speaking to groups including conferences, special events, classes, and student organizations.
Patents protect market share and margins by excluding others from making, using or selling what is covered by them. Patents also take time and money to secure. They may not even be the best way to protect an organization's valuable inventions. Having a patent/IP strategy can help secure an optimal amount of protection for the cost. Appropriate processes ensure efficient execution of the strategy within the organization and when engaging external paid professionals such as IP attorneys. I can help identify appropriate strategies and execution processes (I don't provide legal advice or prepare and prosecute patent applications)..
Besides what is listed above, I am eager to explore other ways that my skills, knowledge, and perspective may be of value to your organization. I am open to working with schools, universities, and non-profits as well as businesses.
I define innovation as being the sum of invention and application (eg commercialization, internal use, and reserve). Too often innovation is equated with application, omitting the critical value that the novelty and non-obviousness of invention brings, especially when combined with intellectual property protection. My work focuses on the inventive component of innovation.
